Why Wiffle Ball Is Cooler Than Ice Hockey
Did you know that the NHL season starts tomorrow? Me neither. But my friend, and fellow MLW player Joe Yerdon probably did. Joe gets paid to write about ice hockey over at Pro Hockey Talk, part of NBC Sports. He often bashes Gary Bettman, for good reason, but being a league Commissioner isn’t as easy as you’d think. Trust me, I know.
Bettman has another problem though that’s beyond his control — ice hockey just isn’t fun.
Air hockey is fun. Table (bubble) hockey is fun. Street hockey is fun. Floor hockey is kind of fun. NHL’94 is the greatest video game ever. But ice hockey just isn’t fun.
Wiffle Ball makes athletes out of all of us. It doesn’t take much talent to play. You can be lazy and out-of-shape, or a pro baseball player, and still play Wiffle Ball. Some players even claim that drinking beer improves their game. This doesn’t happen with ice hockey.
I’ve never worn a pair of ice skates. And who wants to wear a helmet and all those pads? Or even gloves? With Wiffle Ball, you can just pick up a plastic bat and ball and you’re ready to go.
You can play Wiffle Ball just about anywhere. Backyards, streets, parks, and the beach are all Wiffle Ball friendly. In order to play ice hockey, you pretty much have to live in Canada, Minnesota, or Maine. And even if you live there, you can still play Wiffle Ball.
We do incorporate an element of hockey into Major League Wiffleball though. For occasionally wild pitchers, like Joe, we keep a hockey net along side the strike zone net to keep wild pitches from rolling all the way down the street (see photo above). It works pretty well.
So even though the weather is getting cooler, and the NHL season is about to begin, my mind is looking forward to spring, and the beginning of new Wiffle Ball seasons everywhere. And if the weather cooperates, fall ball is right around the corner.
