American Leaguers — Want to hold a wiffleball for our site? So far, two players that have went on to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award.
Back in 2006, Justin Morneau held and autographed a wiffleball for us at spring training, and finished the year by winning the AL MVP Award. Earlier today, Joe Mauer, who also held and autographed a wiffleball for us was named the 2009 AL MVP.
Mauer was a near-unanimous choice, earning 27-of-28 first place votes (Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera got the other), and is only the second catcher in 33 years to win the AL MVP Award.
Most of the baseball playoff races were decided weeks ago. It looked like the American League Central was among those, but the Twins are keeping it interesting, and the race with the Tigers is really heating up.
Of course, we’re all rooting for the Twins here. After all, TC, the Minnesota Twins mascot, held a wiffleball in his mouth for us!
Congratulations to Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins for winning the 2008 State Farm Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium. In the final round, Morneau out-homered Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers 5-3 to win the contest. Runner-up Josh Hamilton stole the show by hitting a record-setting 28 home runs in the first round. …
Congratulations to Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Joe Nathan for being named to the 2008 American League All Star team. The All Star Game will take place on Tuesday, July 15th at Yankee Stadium. Joe Mauer was the leading vote getter among American League catchers, therefore earning the role as the AL’s starting catcher. …
