Over the years, we’ve had many players pick up a wiffleball and try to fire it past opposing batters. Some other players are known for letting those pitchers try that, while standing in the batter’s box with a bat on their shoulder, hoping for a walk.
Today happens to be the day two of those key players were born. On December 29th, Matt Dahlin turns 25, and MLW’s original “Ironman” Eric Coons turns 31.
Everyone’s worst wiffleball nightmare, Quentin Jensen, turns 32 today. Jensen began scaring opposing players at the age of 23, when MLW was founded. Nobody ever threw the ball harder, and no one could ever hit the ball as far as Quentin.
Tied for second in career home runs, Jensen’s total would have been higher if he could have avoided injuries, and if he wasn’t so busy doing non-wiffleball things, like working.
Still, even with limited appearances, it was common to see Quentin’s name at the top of many offensive and pitching categories at the end of each season. He’s also the career leader in doubles, on base percentage, slugging percentage, and batting average — by over .100 points!
Major League Wiffleball all-time home run king Mike Breen is celebrating his 32nd birthday today. Mike belted 58 home runs over three seasons, and won the single season home run title in each of those three seasons (Season 1: 12; Season 2: 18; Season 3: 28). Quentin Jensen, and Mike’s cousin Shaun Breen both trail Mike, and share second place with 41 home runs each during their careers.
In addition to being the wiffleball home run king, Mike is also the MLW leader in runs batted in (140) and total bases (310).
