Fun Tournament Ideas

It’s been a little over six months since our favorite west coast wiffleball league, Wiffleball2K, had their Swingin’ For Santa event. That means that the next one is less that six months away!
If you’re not familiar with Wiffleball2K, it’s the league that helped Major League Wiffleball get started back in 2000. Their commissioner, Joe Creighton was even kind enough to participate in an interview with us last fall.
If you’re looking to create a fun wiffleball atmosphere for your league or tournament, Wiffleball2K’s Swingin’ For Santa is a good model to follow.
A couple of reasons that Swingin’ For Santa stands out from other wiffleball tournaments or events is that Joe and his brother Terry include a few extras. For example, in the spirit of the Christmas season, the Creighton brothers make gifts for all of the participants. One year they made soda with special labels. Last year was Swingin’ For Santa silicone wrist bands.
Now, you don’t have to give gifts or wait until Christmas. This could work around any holiday. Just be sure to stick with a theme. After all, Christmas is all about Santa Claus, so that’s why it works well. Oh yeah, and Jesus too.
I know that playing wiffleball for a few hours can really build-up an appetite. The guys at Wiffleball2K know this too, so they decided to host a competitive eating event after the games. What a great idea!
Those who were interested, that also had $7 to spend, could try to eat a gigantic burrito faster than anyone else (shown above, wrapped). This year, Mark Montgomery won with a time of 7:13, finishing just 2 seconds ahead of Nate Stuempfig.
Please keep in mind that if you have a competitive eating contest, you want to schedule it after your wiffleball games. Devouring food before playing wiffleball wouldn’t go as well.
So by giving back a little, and adding an extra event, it could really help your league or tournament stand out.
We’re hoping that Joe gives back to us and gives us that link that was promised at the end of last year’s interview. Either way, we’re still big fans of the Wiffleball2K crew, and if you’re looking for ways to make your wiffleball league more successful, follow what these guys do.
