David Ortiz Should Use A Wiffleball Bat
Last season, David Ortiz got off to a slow start. This year, it’s even worse. The Red Sox slugger is batting just .229 with no home runs. He’s in the worst slump of his 13-year career.
Not having Manny Ramirez around anymore doesn’t help, but Ortiz hasn’t been the same since his wrist injury, which started bothering him early last season. Our suggestion is that he needs to switch to a lighter bat. Perhaps even, a plastic bat.
Big Papi has wiffleball experience. In October 2006, he participated in the ‘Big Papi Backyard Wiffle Ball’ game, a Boston-area charity event with more than 40 children. Here’s a surprise: when it comes to wiffleball, Ortiz is a switch-hitter.
On a positive note, Ortiz might be starting to warm up. He went 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, two walks, and an RBI on Monday against the Yankees. However, if he feels like he needs a rehabilitation assignment with a much lighter bat, I’m sure we could gather up enough people to get MLW going again full-time.
Back in 2002, when Ortiz was with the Twins, I had the chance to meet with him, but was unsuccessful in luring him from MLB to MLW. Even with the slump, I have a feeling Ortiz would still choose baseball over wiffleball.
Major League Wiffleball wishes David Ortiz the best of luck for the remainder of the 2009 season.
