Game Summary

(World Series Game 4)

Game 4

(Eric, Matt, and Shaun)
vs. (Mike, Quentin, Joe, and Marc)

In this first game of our final game day, Eric Coons took the mound to start his second game of the series. Unfortunately for him, he ended up as the losing pitcher this time too. Coons pitched well, only giving up 4 hits in 4 innings, but one of those hits was a 2-run, 2-out homer by Mike Breen in the bottom of the second, which proved to be the game-winning hit.

Coons battled all game long against opposing pitcher Joe Yerdon. Judging by both pitcher's regular season numbers, this game was expected to be high scoring. However, this was not the case.

This was another one of those extremely close games that we have seen a lot of lately. This almost wasn't the case though. Joe Yerdon loaded the bases in each of the first four innings, and somehow managed to allow only one run. Regular season RBI leader Shaun Breen came up with the bags juiced and two outs four different times, yet he was only able to drive in one run. One reason for this was poor baserunning on the part of Matt Ceccucci. Shaun hit a hard grounder that went under the fence in right field. Matt, who was on second, only ran to third on the play. Shaun, who hustled around the bases, was determined to try for his second career triple. However, when he rounded second, he looked up and saw Matt standing on third base. (He also saw that the outfielder hadn't picked up the ball yet.) So Breen trotted back to second. Outfielder Quentin Jensen then threw the ball back to the mound and called Shaun out as he was standing on second. Shaun was puzzled by the call at first, but he was soon reminded that there was a "ghost runner" behind Matt, meaning that there were now two runners on second base, and one of them was out. Shaun was quite upset, but he did pick up one RBI on the play -- his only one of the game.

Winning pitcher Joe Yerdon allowed 15 baserunners in 5 innings, but somehow only gave up one run. His incredible victory gave his team a comfortable 2 game lead in the series, with staff ace Quentin Jensen scheduled to pitch in the potential series-clincher.
