Knee Surgery for Shaun Breen?
Will
Shaun Breen
miss any playing time because of his injured left knee? Probably not. After receiving
his MR-Arthrogram results on May 10th, Breen promised that he would participate in wiffleball spring training,
which begins on May 26th. Depending on how he feels, he will take each practice and game one-at-a-time
throughout the season.
With Breen's return, one would guess that the results of the MR-Arthrogram were positive, but surprisingly, they
were not. Breen has a moderate deformality of the cartilage in his left knee, specifically an irregularity
and partial loosening of the cartilar fragment from the surface of the apex of the patella. He also has
some mild thickening of his ACL.
Breen's doctor gave him two options: undergo arthroscopic surgery or wait and see if it gets better on its own.
Shaun chose "wait and see," because the injury hadn't been bothering him that much over the past several days.
Shaun suffered another softball related injury on May 9th while pitching batting practice, one of his new team
duties since he retired from the sport. He took a line drive off the right shin, but was OK. Breen commented,
"I'm just glad it was nothing serious. If I had to go to my doctor about this, and he found out I got hurt
again playing softball, he'd be pissed (at me). Right now, it hurts more than my knee does though."
On Friday, April 19th, MLW Commissioner Shaun Breen suffered a knee injury while playing third base in a co-ed
softball practice. The left-handed Breen dove to his right for a ground ball and felt a tear in his left knee.
In 1999, Breen suffered a more serious knee injury while playing in a softball tournament at St Bonaventure
University, the alma mater of MLW players
Eric Coons and
Paul Wheeler.
