Shaun Breen out for Spring Training
On Friday, April 19th, just six weeks before opening day, MLW Commissioner
Shaun Breen suffered a knee injury while playing third base in a co-ed
softball practice. The left-handed Breen dove to his right for a ground ball and felt a tear in his left knee.
The injury has not only brought and end to Breen's softball season, but also his softball career.
His doctor asked him, "What's it going to take, three times for you to to realize this game isn't for you?"
In 1998, Breen suffered a more serious knee injury while playing in a softball tournament at St Bonaventure
University, the alma mater of MLW players
Eric Coons and
Paul Wheeler.
There is still no word on whether or not Breen will be ready to go on opening day. When asked for his comments
he said, "If things don't improve within the next couple of weeks, then I'll probably be out for the season, and
forced to have surgery again."
Surprisingly, walking hasn't been much of a problem for Breen, but his knee does have a limited range of
motion. The knee will not extend nearly as far as a healthy knee should. Breen also said that there's a numbing
feeling around the knee, and that the worst pain comes from tightness on the outside of the knee when he tries
to extend it.
Breen decided to take on softball in addition to wiffleball this year, but because of his injury, he will
now be unable to play softball. Instead, he will serve as the team's official scorekeeper, allowing him more time
to flirt with the attractive young women on the team.
There will be more to come on this story on Thursday, April 25th when Breen visits a specialist. For now, he
remains listed as questionable for opening day (June 2nd).
