Last Year?
By Commissioner Shaun Breen
There's a lack of excitement. Poor communication. Little interest. Ahh, it must
be close to opening day.
The 2001 season started out very similar, and it resulted in our best season ever.
Then again, we had only been around for two years. But something is different this
year. I don't know exactly what it is. Maybe we're finally growing up. Who knows?
However, I can honestly say that as Commissioner of this league, I'm even beginning
to lose interest. There's more to life than wiffleball.
I don't want wiffleball to go away completely, but this is probably the last time that it
will be played in a season format. After this year, I hope to do 3-4 game days per summer,
just to get the whole group together and to do something fun.
IN OTHER NEWS....
Joe Yerdon is questionable for the 2002 season.
He may accept a job in another state. Joe is a key player and will be impossible to
replace. Despite this huge loss, we all wish Joe the best of luck.
I'm feeling OK despite my
recent knee injury. I was told I needed surgery, but I'll probably
wait until the fall, unless it gets worse. I plan to play as often as possible.
There will be no MLW Radio, as originally promised. There were no problems setting it
up on our "good" computer, but we use that to play music during games. When setting it
up on our old Pentium 133 machine, there were configuration problems. Sorry to all of
you who were looking forward to this feature, but how many people would have listened
to a live game anyway? Maybe we'll try to get this working by the Wiffleball World Series
in August.
The pitcher's mound may be moved back to 36 feet, but will probably stay at 33 feet.
This will be decided by the players sometime before opening day.
We are expecting to gain several new rookies. Most of the newcomers will be slightly
older than the current players, but it shouldn't make any difference.
Depending on the number of players this season, we may see the return of the 5-on-5 games.
I want to increase the number of players in a game from 9 (4-on-4 with a DH)
to 10. Any more than 10 would be unfair because not everyone would be given an opportunity
to pitch. Even with 10, there's the possibility that the #5 batter on the visiting team may
not get a chance to pitch.
There's a chance that several MLW players will head south to Long Island, NY for an interleague
rematch against the team known as WiffleWOOD. Last season, three WiffleWOOD players made the
trip to the Sac and lost to MLW 6-2.
Mike Breen,
Matt Dahlin, and
Matt Ceccucci represented MLW.
That does it for now. Here's to a great, final season.
