League owner orders lockout
Upset with the sudden drop in attendance, League Commissioner and owner,
Shaun Breen, issued
a two-week lockout. All games scheduled between July 1st and 13th were cancelled, which
totaled four games of the twenty game season, or twenty percent of the regular season.
Breen ranted, "All I ask is that people show up. I put in more effort than everyone else
combined. I have other things that I'd like to do, too, and for the next couple of weeks,
I'm going to do them. No games, no web site updates, no wiffleball, period."
After Breen cooled down he issued the following statement, "Something is different this year.
I don't know exactly what it is, but everything associated with the game seems like a chore.
People are beginning to lose interest, and I can honestly say, as the founder of this
league, that I'm one of them. There's more to life than wiffleball. I'd rather do something
more valuable or rewarding with my time. I'm not saying that I want the league to go away
completely, but some changes need to be made."
Breen ended on a positive note, "I would like to thank
Mike Breen and
Joe Yerdon, who have
played in each game this season. I'd also like to thank
Quentin Jensen for
coming out of retirement
to help the league. But most importantly, I'd like to thank
Eric Coons, who
played four games with a torn ACL."
