The Streak
By Commissioner Shaun Breen
What's most impressive?
Mike Breen's 18 home runs in a single season?
Quentin Jensen's .553 batting average?
Matt Dahlin's 13.4 strikeout ratio? Or
Eric Coons' consecutive innings streak? I'd give the
nod to Eric.
It would take too long to count all the innings, but Eric has played in all 51 games. Only I have played in
the same number of games, but I sat out 4 1/2 innings of Game 5 of the 2000 season. Eric hasn't missed a
pitch.
Eric is also the life of the league. Just like I can't imagine what
SpeedBall would have been like without
Bill Maloney, I can't imagine what wiffleball would be like without
Eric Coons.
Eric's streak is impressive, but is it enough to keep him from taking his turn on the bench if that time comes?
I say yes. Anyone who has been that dedicated should be rewarded. Eric has been attending sports at the Sac
for about 8 years now, and he's made it clear that this will be his 9th.
However, we're expecting most of our players to return and a few new rookies, so there may be times when there
are too many players. In this case, it's only a matter of time until it will be the Ironman's turn to sit one
out. Eric will have to make the decision on his own though; I will not force him to end his streak.
Furthermore, I will not force anyone on any type of significant streak to sit out. If a player has a
multi-game home run streak, a 10+ scoreless innings streak, or any other noteworthy accomplishment, he will be
given every opportunity to play.
Eric did sit out the interleague game against WiffleWOOD from Long Island, NY. Eric decided to be the official
D.J. for that game, and played songs such as Patrick Swayze's "She's Like the Wind". Although he did miss this
game, it was technically not an official MLW game, so his streak remains alive.
IN OTHER NEWS...
I apologize for the lack of updates during the offseason. The truth is, there wasn't much to write about,
except for the
Florida trip and meeting Peter Gammons. Please understand, during the fall
and winter months the players don't see one another very often. Most of us are busy working, and a few are
still in school. MLW is just something we do for fun when the weather is nice.
I was contacted by a reporter from Sports Illustrated. He's doing a story on relatively unknown sports. He
may mention this league in an upcoming article. Keep your fingers crossed.
I expect to have a 2002 version of the site up shortly before opening day (June 2nd). I've been working on it
off and on for the past few months. It will look very much like the site looks now, only it will be easier for
me to update.
Opening day, the biggest day of our season, is just a few weeks away. Keep checking back for updates.
