"Ironman" Eric Coons lost for season
The league's most important player,
Eric Coons (left) will miss the
entire 2002 season. On Friday, June 7th, Eric's MRI revealed a complete
tear of his ACL.
The injury occurred on May 26th during the first spring training session
of 2002 on a Mike Breen
fly ball to right-center field. Eric, who was on first base at the
time, saw the ball fall in and hustled to second base. Eric did not
see it bounce once and off the field, which resulted in a ground-rule
double. Newcomer, "The Rock",
who was unfamiliar with the rules, picked the ball up and fired it
at Eric, who thought, because of the way the ball was fielded, that
the ball was in play. Eric jumped out of the way, to avoid the "tag",
twisted his knee, and came crashing down on it. Eric left the game
immediately and iced his knee. He hasn't played since.
Eric had played in every inning of every regular season and playoff
game, a span of 51 games. However, on opening day 2002, Eric's consecutive
games played streak came to an end. Now officially on the 60-day disabled
list, Eric plans to attend as many game days as possible and spend
his time in the broadcast booth.
