2001 Player Awards
As voted upon by 10 players, 2 staff members, and over 100 visitors to this web site.

Most Valuable Player
2001 Most Valuable Player: Quentin JensenQuentin Jensen won an extremely close vote to win the 2001 MLW Most Valuable Player Award, his first ever. Shaun Breen finished in second place for the second year in a row, and last season's MVP, Mike Breen, finished third.

Quentin was arguably the best player of 2001. He had the highest winning percentage of any player and led in several hitting categories despite spending two weeks on the disabled list with a strained right bicep.

This was an award that was truly determined by our Internet visitors. Players and the league's staff chose Shaun Breen as the winner, but web visitors voted him third behind Quentin Jensen and Eric Coons.

Note: Players received 14 points for a first place vote, 9 points for a second place vote, and 8 points for a third place vote.

Biggest Surprise:

Just one point separated the top two vote recipients. It doesn't get any closer than this!

Cy Young Award
2001 Cy Young Award Winner: Matt DahlinRookie Matt Dahlin made batters look terrible at the plate in 2001. In return, they rewarded him with the 2001 MLW Cy Young Award.

Dahlin allowed just one hit in 15.2 innings, struck out 42 of 51 batters, and allowed no runners to cross home plate in the regular season. Matt has a deadly arsenal of pitches, including a hard fastball, a nasty curveball, and a dancing knuckleball. He is the top candidate for this award in 2002.

Note: Players received 10 points for a first place vote, 7 points for a second place vote, and 5 points for a third place vote.

Biggest Surprise:

Once again, Quentin Jensen finished ahead of Shaun Breen by just one point.

Rookie of the Year
2001 Rookie of the Year: Matt DahlinMatt Dahlin earned 11 of 12 first place votes to run away with the first ever MLW Rookie of the Year Award.

Dahlin had more home runs and runs batted in than all other rookies combined! His pitching was excellent too, and led him to the MLW Cy Young Award.

Note: Players received 10 points for a first place vote, 7 points for a second place vote, and 5 points for a third place vote.

Biggest Surprise:

Why didn't Matt receive all 12 first place votes?

Gold Glove
2001 Gold Glove Award Winner: Quentin Jensen Quentin Jensen upset many hitters by robbing them of base hits, and more importantly, made the routine plays in the field to earn the 2001 MLW Gold Glove Award.

Quentin was a pitcher's best friend. He saved many of them several runs with his great defense. Mike Breen, who finished second, played great defense all year long, but once again, his lack of "great" plays kept him out of first place. Last year's winner, Eric Coons, finished in third place.

Note: Players received 5 points for a first place vote, 3 points for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.

Biggest Surprise:

Shaun Breen, the only player who actually wore a glove on the field finished in fourth place. Therefore, Quentin more accurately won the Gold Hand Award.

Most Improved Player
2001 Most Improved Player: Eric CoonsEric Coons edged out Joe Yerdon to win the 2001 Most Improved Player Award. Coons, who batted just .196 with 3 home runs in 2000, hit .328 and belted 9 homers in 2001.

In comparison, Joe Yerdon hit .233 with 6 home runs in 2000 and .359 with 8 homers in 2001.

Twelve of the league's seventeen players received votes for this award, more than in any other category.

Note: Players received 5 points for a first place vote, 3 points for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.

Biggest Surprise:

Newcomers Matt Dahlin, Brian Glasser, and Dave Marinucci all received votes. C'mon voters, this award is meant for returning players only.

Best Sportsman
2001 Best Sportsman: Dave 'The Nooch' MarinucciHe didn't attend enough games to show a temper, and that could be the reason why Dave Marinucci was voted the MLW's Best Sportsman of 2001.

Mike Breen deserved this award just as much as last year, but fell just a few points short. Neither Dave nor Mike would argue calls, and they always tried hard, proving they were true team players.

Ten of the league's seventeen players were written-in for this award. Perhaps the league is full of good sportsmen.

Note: Players received 5 points for a first place vote, 3 points for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.

Biggest Surprise:

Quentin Jensen received three first place votes, but no second or third place votes.

Worst Sportsman
2001 Worst Sportsman: Marc CeccucciAnyone can throw a bat after striking out, but Marc Ceccucci guaranteed himself this award when he punted the bowl of balls after completing a rough inning on the mound.

Marc, who is known for kicking the bowl across the field after a bad inning, decided to punt once instead and voters definitely noticed. Joe Yerdon finished in a near second, and Shaun Breen, who promised himself to show more emotion on the field prior to the 2001 season, finished third.

Note: Players received 5 points for a first place vote, 3 points for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.

Biggest Surprise:

Quentin Jensen was overlooked for this award by nearly all voters. In a night game, Jensen pulled Dave Marinucci in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs and his team up by ten runs, just to selfishly record the last out. He also left before the much anticipated interleague challenge because he was mad that he allowed a run earlier in the regular season game. He failed to comprehend that these people drove four hours to face him and never got the chance.

Most Feared Player
2001 Most Feared Player Quentin Jensen seen pitching to Jim Breen This could be looked at in a few ways: the player you hate to bat against, the player you'd least like to pitch to, or a combination of the two.

No matter how one viewed this, it was no real surprise that Quentin Jensen finished in first place. He was a threat at the plate with a .533 average and 17 home runs, and on the mound with 45 strikeouts in only 18.2 innings.

Note: Players received 3 points for a first place vote, 2 points for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.

Biggest Surprise:

No surprises in the outcome, but Joe Yerdon was slightly overlooked.
