2000 Player Awards
As voted upon by the following league members:
Jim Breen, Mike Breen, Shaun Breen, Marc Ceccucci, Matt Ceccucci,
Eric Coons, Quentin Jensen, Ryan Montalbano, and Joe Yerdon.
|
| Most Valuable Player |
It became clear around mid-season who the league's MVP would be. Mike Breen
simply dominated opposing pitchers, and looked sharp on the mound, too.
He trailed his cousin Shaun Breen in most offensive categories, but one
can argue that's only because Shaun played in six more games than Mike.
One offensive category that Mike easily won was the home run title. He went
deep 12 times, 6 more than any other player.
Quentin Jensen probably would have earned more votes if he had attended
more games, but instead he finished behind Joe Yerdon. Yerdon ended the
year with six homers, as did second place finisher Shaun Breen. Eric Coons
appeared on two ballots, both as third place votes.
Note: Players received 14 points for a first place vote, 9 points
for a second place vote, and 8 points for a third place vote.
Biggest Surprise:
This finished how everyone expected. Mike was the premiere player of the
league. Quentin probably could have made things interesting if he was able
to play in more games.

| Cy Young Award |
Even though he didn't pitch the minimum number of innings to qualify for the
league lead in pitching categories, most of the players thought that Quentin
Jensen deserved the Cy Young Award. Quentin made most hitters look terrible
at the plate, striking out 31 of the 48 batters that he faced, and never
allowing a run.
Shaun Breen, who did lead the league in most pitching categories, only because
Quentin didn't pitch 3 more innings, finished in second place. Breen had
an ERA just under 1.00 and allowed just over one baserunner an inning. He
also led the league in saves with 5.
Note: Players received 10 points for a first place vote, 7 points
for a second place vote, and 5 points for a third place vote.
Biggest Surprise:
Even though Quentin and Shaun were the most dominant pitchers, showing excellent
control while getting hitters out, they did not appear on all 9 ballots.
Joe Yerdon, who allowed over 3 baserunners per inning, over 8 runs per game,
and 42 walks in 15.2 innings, appeared on each ballot in which Shaun and
Quentin were not listed. |

| Gold Glove |
If we had video taped these games, Eric Coons would have finished the season
with the most web gems. Eric seemed to make at least one remarkable play
every game, and even made them look easy. He appeared on 7 of 9 ballots,
and in first place 6 of those times.
Mike Breen finished in a sort-of distant second. Just after the All Star
Game, Mike said that he would make defense his number one priority. He played
well in the field all season long, but the lack of "great" plays
kept him out of the top spot.
Note: Players received 5 points for a first place vote, 3 points
for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.
Biggest Surprise:
No real surprises here, but Quentin and Shaun finished with identical totals
in each column. This is the only time this happened in any category. |

| Most Improved Player |
Matt Ceccucci, who batted only .188 with 2 extra-base hits in the first half
of the season, came on strong after the All Star Game and went on to bat
.311 with 5 extra-base hits, two of them homers, in the second half. No
other player improved nearly as much.
Matt received 8 of 9 first place votes, and appeared on all 9 ballots. Most
of the other players that received votes played more or less the same all
season long.
Note: Players received 5 points for a first place vote, 3 points
for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.
Biggest Surprise:
Marc Ceccucci, who actually was worse in the second half, received two second
place votes and one third place vote. |

| Best Sportsman |
Mike Breen deserved this award just as much as the MVP award. Mike never argued
calls, always tried hard, and was a true team player. His name appeared
on 7 of the 9 ballots, and in first place 5 of those times.
More players were written-in for this award than for any other. Perhaps
the league is full of good sportsmen.
Note: Players received 5 points for a first place vote, 3 points
for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.
Biggest Surprise:
Marc Ceccucci in second place? Any player who neglects to do the scorebook
after a lousy inning on the mound or kicks over the bowl full of balls after
giving up a homer doesn't even deserve a vote in my opinion. |

| Most Feared Player |
This could be looked at in a few ways: the player you hate to bat against, the
player you'd least like to pitch to, or a combination of the two.
No matter how one viewed this, it was no real surprise that Quentin Jensen
finished in first place. What is surprising is that he appeared on all 9
ballots without receiving a third place vote.
Quentin finished far ahead of the other vote-getters. The middle of the
pack finished close together, separated by only 3 points.
Note: Players received 3 points for a first place vote, 2 points
for a second place vote, and 1 point for a third place vote.
Biggest Surprise:
Eric Coons made the list? No offense, but he's not exactly a scary player.
I think even Eric will agree with me on that. |
