Beach Wiffleball
My beach wiffleball career got off to a rough start. Back in February 1982, (former) Mets pitcher Neil Allen struck me out on three pitches in Treasure Island, Florida. I was 3 years old.
Neil Allen went on to get traded to the Cardinals for Keith Hernandez, and in recent years, Allen’s son (Neil Jr.) went on to date a former girlfriend of MLW’s own Joe Yerdon. That’s 100% true. It’s a small world after all.
Anyway, a few months ago, I visited Cocoa Beach, Florida with high hopes of making some happier beach wiffleball memories. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
Finding a spot to play can be pretty difficult. If there are condos nearby, their beaches may be empty, compared to the jam-packed hotels, so take a walk over there and play if you can. We traveled at a peak time, so this may have had something to do with it.
You’ll need to get out there early to claim a spot. Not too early though, or else you might witness a couple “getting frisky” with each other. Yes, that’s 100% true too.
During the day, the sand gets burning hot. There was one day when I couldn’t even walk on it barefoot. Bring proper footwear. It’ll protect you from sharp seashells too.
Watch out for crabs. There were crabs all over the place. They run away when you get close, but if you’re running the bases, it might get interesting.
I brought my own wiffleballs, but I didn’t travel with a bat. It wasn’t that difficult to find a bat in a store, but all I could find were the traditional yellow bats.
If MLW played on a beach instead of The Sac, I’d definitely use the ocean as home run territory. With the tide going in and out, home run distances would always be changing. I think that would add to the fun (and frustration) level.
We’ll be going back to Cocoa Beach again real soon. This time it shouldn’t be as crowded since the kids are back in school.
My goal on this trip is to just take a few swings, maybe hit some balls into the ocean, and write MajorLeagueWiffleball.com in the sand.
Anyone else enjoy beach wiffleball? Got any tips? Let us know in the comments.
