Swingin’ For Santa
While many of us are spending the day playing with our new Christmas presents, or out returning the ones that we didn’t want for cash, Chico, California is celebrating the return of wiffleball to “The Sac”.
Rather than call it something plain and expected like “Winterball”, Joe Creighton and his brother Terry, of Wiffleball2K, have organized “Swingin’ For Santa”, a Christmas-themed wiffleball event.
Merry Christmas
While it might be too cold in your hometown to go outside and play wiffleball today, hopefully there were some wiffleball presents under your Christmas tree this year. If not, you can still go Christmas shopping for yourself and get the things you really wanted. And you can stay inside where it’s warm.
If you were lucky enough to get an Amazon.com Gift Card, Amazon.com has a huge selection of wiffleball items that you can select from, and their equipment can help you get a head start on preparing for the upcoming wiffleball season. Even if you didn’t get an Amazon.com Gift Card,
their prices and selection are great.
Or maybe you’re looking for some wiffleball apparel to keep warm. We’ve got wiffleball T-shirts and a sweatshirt in the MLW CafePress store.
And if you’re looking for wiffleball items that we recommend, head on over to our Shop page.
Whether you’re celebrating Christmas today or not, I’d like to wish all wiffleball fans a very happy holiday season.
Boof…He’s Gone
In case you missed it — we did — Boof Bonser was designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins on December 8th, and then traded to the Boston Red Sox on December 10th for a player to be named later.
Bonser posed with a wiffleball at Twins spring training in Fort Myers, Florida a couple of years ago.
Yes, Boof is really his first name. He was born John Paul Bonser, but legally changed his first name to Boof after the 2001 season.
Bonser was part of the famous trade with the San Francisco Giants that brought pitchers Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano to Minnesota for catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who is now with the Chicago White Sox.
In 2008, MLB.com picked Boof Bonser to have the best nickname in baseball.
Ten Question Interview: Joe Creighton – Wiffleball2K.com
Back in 2000, I got the idea to form my own wiffleball league in Cohoes, New York from a web site run by Joe Creighton across the country in Chico, California.
Joe, who is now living in Seattle, Washington, is the founder and commissioner of Wiffleball2K. Last winter he returned to Chico, CA and organized “Swingin’ For Santa”, a day of wiffleball with a Christmas theme (and an eating contest).
Just before the event took place, Joe was kind enough to answer a few questions in the first ever MLW interview.
